Build a bridge for golden langurs | E-gift

Description

Golden langurs were once abundant in the forests of northwestern Assam, India. They’re considered sacred by Himalayan people and, along with tigers and elephants, are one of the most protected species in India. However, since the 1970s half of the forests they call home have been destroyed. Busy highways and electrical power cables divide their remaining habitat, and many langurs are killed by vehicles, or electrocuted by power lines. With dangerous obstacles at every turn, and confined to an extremely restricted area, golden langurs are now one of the most endangered primates on the planet. We’re funding Dr Jihosuo Biswas in Assam to help these amazing animals by building bridges and replanting their forest.

Jihosuo and his team are installing bridges across highways in areas that aren’t connected by the tree canopy. This gives golden langurs a way to cross busy roads Without risking being hit by cars or using power line cables which could electrocute them. The bridges that are already installed are making a real difference. One bridge reduced road collisions at a known hotspot by 74%. The team is also planting trees – saplings of betel nut, areca nut, and coconut trees –  in villages and farmland to repair the forest habitat and create more safe routes for golden langurs and other wildlife.
