Bechstein’s bats are one of the UK’s rarest mammals. They are so rare that a couple of decades ago, there were only a few known breeding populations in the UK. Found in parts of southern England and south–east Wales, they rely on woodland habitat for roosting, foraging, and hibernating. But we’ve lost much of our ancient mature woodlands over the years so they have far fewer places to live. 

We’re lucky enough to have Bechstein’s bats living in PTES’ protected ancient woodland reserve, Briddlesford Woods, on the Isle of Wight. To give the bats a much-needed boost, we’re installing nest boxes in the trees which are specifically designed to provide safe roosting and nesting places and also allow us to monitor them and their young. By buying this virtual gift for a relative or friend, you’ll be giving a Bechstein’s bat the greatest gift – a place to call home. Each box costs £74, and lasts up to 50 years, helping many generations of Bechstein’s bats.  You have the option to help buy a single box, half, or part of a Bechstein’s bat box.
