We can’t ignore the real and imminent likelihood of wildcats dying out in Britain. Historic habitat loss and persecution decimated their population, and breeding with domestic cats has diluted the already shrinking wildcat gene pool.

Releasing wildcats from a conservation breeding programme into the wild is now the only option to save the species. In a bespoke breeding centre at Highland Wildlife Park in the Cairngorms National Park, remaining wildcats are being paired up to breed kittens for release back into the wild. Each kitten must be vaccinated and trained with the life skills they need for the wild, including hunting and foraging. Local feral cats will be neutered and landowners encouraged to protect their new inhabitants.
