Only 100 years ago, dormice were widespread throughout England and Wales. But the ancient woodlands and network of hedgerows they rely on are shrinking. Their numbers are falling and their populations are more isolated as roads and developments carve up their habitat.

We’re working hard to promote better woodland management and restore hedgerows, but dormice need more urgent help. That’s why we carefully return them to areas where they have been lost, giving new populations the chance to grow.

Dormice are released in small groups of breeding pairs, with food, water and nest boxes nearby. With the right help, these founder populations will produce many generations of dormice in the coming years, helping to rebuild a healthy population thanks to you.

By placing dormouse boxes in woodlands across the country, we also provide safe nesting places where natural sites are scarce. Just as importantly, the boxes help us monitor how dormice are doing. They show us where populations are struggling, where future releases could help fill the gaps, and where better hedgerow connections are needed so dormice can move through the landscape and find breeding partners.
